There are 77 Thailand Provinces (Changwat) including the Metropolitan Municipality of Bangkok. Each of the Thailand Provinces is subdivided into Districts called Amphoe of which Thailand has 877. These Districts are again split into Sub-Districts called Tambon. In Bangkok the Districts (Amphoe) are called Khet. The 77th Province, Bung Kam, was officially designated as a Province on 23rd March 2011.
All the Thailand Provinces are administered by a Governor who is appointed by the government with the exception of Bangkok where the governor is elected by the constituents. The largest province in Thailand is Nakhon Ratchasima and the smallest is Samut Songkhram.
Below is a list of all the Thailand Provinces organized by region.
The Administration Office (Thiwagan Amphoe) for each region is situated in an Amphoe, usually the Amphoe with the largest population and convenient for people to reach, which is called Amphoe Meuang except in Ayutthaya where the administration Amphoe is called Amphoe Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. Mileage distance is always calculated as the distance from the Administration Office. Each District or Amphoe has its own District Chief Officer (Nai Amphoe) who, like the Governors to whom they are subordinate, are appointed by the Government. Minor Districts (King Amphoe) are sometimes set up to help with administration and are subordinate to the Amphoe. As population changes, Amphoes can be relegated or created according to a District’s needs.
