Money in Thailand - Baht

Money in Thailand is called “Baht” (฿), sometimes written “Bath”. Money in Thailand is available as banknotes, 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20 and 10 Baht (Rare) and also as coins, 10, 5, 2 and 1 Baht. You may also come across Satang. ( 100 Satang = 1 Baht). Satang are rarely used as they now have so little value but you may receive some in your change from Supermarkets and Department Stores who prefer to use Satang rather than round the prices up or down when calculating VAT.

Thailand has recently begun to change the materials used in some coins, which has changed the colours of some of the coins, therefore the 2 Baht, 50 Satang and 25 Satang are available in 2 different colours. All are still legal tender. The Bank of Thailand is responsible for the issue of Thai currency.

Some points worth noting about Thai money.

All currency, notes and coins, bear an image of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, The King of Thailand, and therefore should be treated with respect to avoid giving offense.

Taxis and some small shops often have problems changing high value notes so try to carry some small change when you go out.

If you use a credit card for purchases you will often be charged more than the cash price. This is because the vendors are charged 2-5% by the Credit Card Companies.

If you use a foreign credit card in a Thai ATM machine, you will be charged a 150 Baht handling charge.

When you use a credit card to pay for goods, try to ensure that your card is charged in Thai Baht as your Credit Card Company will give you a better rate of exchange than the vendors.
