    Phuping Palace-Royal Residence-Chiang Mai

    By admin | February 5, 2010

The Phuping Palace (Bhuping/Bhubing) is a Royal Residence. Located on a mountain above the famous Chiang Mai Temple, Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, the Phuping Palace is the winter residence of the Thai Royal Family. The Phuping Palace was built in 1961, with several other buildings added later and now also serves as a Royal Guest House for State visitors from abroad.

Visitors are only allowed into the extensive grounds but many of the Royal buildings can be viewed from the outside. The gardens of the Phuping Palace are delightful especially the Fern garden planted on a small hill and the outstanding Suan Suwaree Rose garden which was laid out under the instructions of Her Royal Highness Queen Sirikit. The air is much cooler than down below in the city of Chiang Mai and therefore walking through the gardens is pleasant and relaxing but a trolley car service is available for those who wish.

Perhaps one of the most attractive features of the Phuping Palace is the Fountain of Celestial Water of the People. This is a musical fountain on a water reservoir which provides water for the Palace. The banks of the reservoir are planted in both formal and informal styles with temperate flowering plants.

Among the buildings to be seen are
Ruen Peek Mai, the seasonal residence of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn.
Ruen Rab Rong, The Royal Guest House.
Phra Tamnak Phuping Rajanives, The Phuping Palace.
Phra Tamnak Payak Sathit, the seasonal residence of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn
Hor Phra, the private Royal Shrine.

The gardens of the Phuping Palace are open daily from 8:30am – 11:30am and 1pm – 3:30pm but are closed when the Royal Family is in residence (usually between January-March). The wearing of shorts or other unsuitable clothing is not allowed but garments may be rented at the kiosk.
