The Sukhothai hotels we list below include hotels near the historic city of Sukhothai and also in the modern city of Sukhothai.

Sukhothai, which translated from Pali means “The Dawn of Happiness”, is extremely important in the history of Thailand, or Siam as it used to be called. Founded in the 13th century when it was taken from the Khmers, Sukhothai became the 1st Capital of Siam. During the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng, the 3rd King of Sukhothai, Sukhothai flourished. It is believed that the Thai alphabet was devised by King Ramkhamhaeng who was also instrumental in laying down the foundations for the system of government. The Golden age of Sukhothai was relatively short lived and after repeated attacks from Ayudhaya finally accepted vassalage and the Capital of Siam, later to become Thailand, was moved to Ayudhaya.
