Thai Wat – Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Tong » Thai Guide To Thailand


Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Tong is one of the most important Thai Temples in Northern Thailand.


This Thai Wat is believed to contain a holy Buddha relic which is kept in a Golden Chedi. The Golden Chedi at Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Tong dates back to 1452 but the present Viharn was constructed during the 19th Century. The legend associated with Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Tong relates that the Lord Buddha visited the hill top where the Temple now stands and foretold that a holy relic would be found at that spot some time in the future. The holy relic that was found is thought to be a part of the right side of the Lord Buddha’s head.

Thai Wat that contain holy relics usually inter them underground but an unusual feature of Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Tong is that the relic is kept within the Golden Chedi and is displayed during Buddhist festivals.

Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Tong is also home to the Insight Meditation Centre which offers various courses for both Thai and non-Thais who wish to study Insight Meditation.

Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Tong is the Temple associated with the Year of the Rat, one of the 12 animals in the Thai Zodiac. Thai people who are born in the Year of the Rat will try to make at least one pilgrimage during their life to this Temple.

Wat Phrathat Sri Chom Tong is located in the Chom Tong district of Chiang Mai. At times, this Thai Wat can be fairly crowded as it is now a major tourist attraction as well as a most revered place of worship for all Buddhists in Thailand.
