A Secret Garden – Dokmai Garden
By admin | December 12, 2009
Dokmai Garden is a secret garden, hidden away slightly off the beaten track but within easy traveling distance of Chiang Mai. Dokmai Garden is privately owned by the Seehamongkol family who, as a labour of love, have turned a former Longan orchard into a gardener’s delight with over 800 species of Tropical plants, trees and vegetables, each with its own very informative aluminium sign in three languages. From the first moment you enter this secret garden as I did, with little or no knowledge of Thailand’s rich and varied flora, Dokmai Garden will delight and enchant you. The friendly staff at Dokmai Garden are always on hand to help with information about all aspects of the garden and its plants. They will even show you how to cook some of the vegetables grown in their garden. With so many different species of tropical plants on view, Dokmai Garden will draw you back again and again to witness nature’s magic in the changing seasons.

Dokmai Garden is fairly compact covering an area of around 4 Hectares and being laid out on mostly flat ground it is very relaxing to walk around and there are Thai, English and Japanese speaking Guides to help you if you wish, but with most of the plants so well documented you can of course wander around on your own. Dokmai Garden is not a brightly coloured regimented municipal garden but a botanical garden laid out by experienced horticulturists, to give both pleasure and information to anyone who loves plants.

Among the facilities at Dokmai Garden are a shop, built in the Lanna style from reclaimed teak wood with a small carefully selected range of high quality items (definitely not the average souvenir shop) together with some horticultural books, and a delightful small outdoor restaurant serving a range of outstanding Thai food, together with a small bar where you can purchase a glass of chilled white wine, fruit juice or beer which you can sip as you walk round the garden or try one of their very own Mai Sak cocktails which has frozen cubes of teakwood instead of ice. There are also some rare plants on sale. Various other activities can be arranged if booked in advance including guided visits to a forest, market and an unspoiled Thai village where you can also spend a night.

Dokmai Garden is open 6 days a week (Closed Mondays) and is open from 10am. The Restaurant is open 10am – 9pm Tues – Sun.
Dokmai Garden is located off the Canal Road to Samoeng. Further information can be obtained at Tel: +66 (0)89- 4339045
