Sak Yant – Monkey – Ling Lom

    By admin | February 8, 2010

The Sak Yant, Monkey design known as Ling Lom means ‘Air Monkey’ or ‘Dancing Monkey’ and is also sometimes called ‘Hanuman Boxing’. Ling Lom has an interesting story behind it and one that is still slightly controversial. It is said that Ling Lom was an ancient Martial Art practiced in Thailand and Laos before the introduction of Muay Thai and the techniques became part of Muay Lopburi, a regional form of Muay Thai. Lopburi is called the City of Monkeys and is believed to have been founded by Hanuman, the Monkey God. Many people believe that both Ling Lom and Muay Boran were practiced alongside each other until about 1700 when they became separate arts. Muay Boran, later to become Muay Thai, was the more popular of the two and Ling Lom began to disappear. Tony Jaa in the Thai Martial Arts film Ong-Bak exibits some of the techniques of Ling Lom.

This Monkey Yant, as with the Hanuman Yant, will bestow wisdom, strength and devotion. The Ling Lom Yant contains a Katha or Mantra written in the ancient Lanna script.

And still I’m wondering how to go about getting a Sak Yant done if you are a female….seeing as how monks cannot touch the ladies. How would you get a real, authentic, Sak Yant?

Ajarn Phra Gamtorn in a Temple in San Patong, Chiang Mai will do Sak Yant for women. I can give you more details and make the arrangements if you are interested.

Please note that the ajarn are not always buddhist monks and therefore not prohibited from touching women.
