Sak Yant – Chiang Mai » Thai Guide To Thailand

We are very fortunate to have a senior Buddhist Monk in the Thailand province of Chiang Mai who is also a Sak Yant Master. Phra Ajarn Gamtorn has been involved with Sak Yant tattoos for over 17 years and is currently at Wat Nong Khem, a small Temple in San Patong, about 45 minutes from Chiang Mai where he has kindly allowed us to photograph his work on several occasions. Whilst the majority of the Sak Yant Designs in Thailand which incorporate script are written in Khom, an ancient Khmer language, Phra Ajarn Gamtorn additionally has several designs which include Lanna script. Many years ago, Chiang Mai was the capital of the Kingdom of Lanna and much of the former Lanna culture still lives on today in Chiang Mai.

Phra Ajarn Gamtorn has a large range of traditional Sak Yant designs available but welcomes designs supplied by Sak Yant devotees and because of his great experience, he is able to easily alter any of the existing designs if required. If you are fortunate to receive a Yant from Phra Ajarn Gamtorn, kindly note that only donations are accepted. Phra Ajarn Gamtorn’s work is in great demand, and on Fridays and Saturdays there will be many people queuing so it is always better to make an appointment.

Because no English is spoken at this Temple, which is distant from Chiang Mai and somewhat difficult to find, we can offer a comprehensive Thai/English guide service, including translation and transportation, to people wishing to receive a Yant at Wat Nong Khem. Contact us for further details.
