Wat Sanghathan Meditation Center

Wat Sanghathan Meditation Center, one of the popular Thailand Meditation Centers, is located in the Thailand Province of Nonthaburi, very close to Bangkok. Wat Sanghathan Meditation Center offers Meditation based on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, Mindfulness on breathing and other methods as taught in the Tripitaka (Scriptures). You are allowed to stay at the Wat Sanghathan Meditation Center for 7 days to learn about meditation and the Lord Buddha’s teachings but you can request a longer stay if required. Wat Sanghathan Meditation Center is on the Chao Phraya River in a large secluded area with landscaped gardens with many trees and ponds. A very unusual feature at Wat Sanghathan is the octagonal glass Ordination Hall which houses the Luang Por Tho Buddha image.

Whilst the majority of the people meditating at Wat Sanghathan Meditation Center are Thais, there are a few monks and nuns who can speak English and will help with translation. In addition to meditation, it is possible to ordain as a monk or a nun at Wat Sanghathan. During your retreat you should wear white clothing which can be purchased at the Center’s shop. (Do not wear shorts or improper clothes). Apart from speaking with your teacher, silence must be observed at all times. Smoking is not permitted and mobile phones and jewelry should not be taken into the Center. You will also be required to agree to the Eight Precepts
1. Refrain from killing any living creature.
2. Refrain from taking anything which does not belong to you.
3. Refrain from having any sexual activity.
4. Refrain from telling lies or speaking impolitely.
5. Refrain from drinking intoxicating liquors and taking drugs
6. Refrain from eating after 12 o’clock mid-day.
7. Refrain from dancing, singing, listening to music, wearing jewelry, perfumes and cosmetics.
8. Refrain from lying on a high and luxurious bed.

Accommodation at Wat Sanghathan Meditation Center is in individual rooms or dormitories and men and women are segregated. A wide variety of Thai food is served at the buffet along with some vegetarian dishes. Only one meal a day is permitted.
Daily Schedule
04.00 a.m. Morning chanting until 04.30 – followed by sitting meditation.
06.00 a.m. Warm drinks.
07.30 a.m. Walking meditation
09.00 a.m. Food from the Buffet
12.30 p.m. Chanting and Meditation until 13.30 p.m.
15.30 p.m. Communal cleaning.
16.30 p.m. Walking meditation
17.30 p.m. Drinks and rest period.
19.00 p.m. Evening chanting
20.00 p.m. Sitting meditation at the Dhamma Hall.
