Lanna Thai Wedding
By admin | December 22, 2009
We took a step back into the past when we attended a traditional Lanna Thai Wedding in Chiang Mai. The Bride and Groom and their immediate families together with many of the guests were resplendent in traditional Lanna Costumes. A Thai Wedding ceremony is not normally conducted by a Monk but by an Ajarn, in this case, one learned in the Ancient Lanna Thai language. The couple will already have received the blessing of a Buddhist Monk at their homes before the ceremony. The part of the ceremony to which we were invited is called Rod Nahm Sang. At this ceremony, the Bride and Groom pay their respects to both sets of parents and exchange rings. Gifts are also given by the people attending, and is usually money or flowers. Money is presented in an envelope with the name of the donor written on it. The Ajarn pours water over the hands of the Bride and Groom and binds their hands together with cord which is called Dai to symbolize the joining together in marriage. After this part of the ceremony, food is provided for all the people invited and this being a Lanna wedding, the food provided was traditional Northern Thai.

We would like to thank the Bride and Groom, Khun Somporn Songtakgun and Khun Pirapong Boonleh for their kindness in allowing us to be part of their wedding celebrations and we wish them both happiness and good fortune in their new life together.
