Thai Orchid – Rhynchostylis gigantea Lindl. petotiana » Thai Guide To Thailand


Rhynchostylis gigantea Lindl. is a most attractive Thai Orchid. There are several colour varieties of Rhynchostylis gigantea and this variety, petotiana, known as Chang Peuak in Thailand, has white flowers with a pale green column.


Rhynchostylis gigantea is becoming a collector’s species with new colour varieties appearing regularly. Rhynchostylis gigantea Lindl. petotiana can be found in Southern China and throughout mainland S.E. Asia but unfortunately, in Thailand can rarely be found in its natural habitat.

Rhynchostylis gigantea Lindl. petotiana is an epiphytic orchid with an erect stem and long large roots. The white flowers are 1.5cm across with a very spicy fragrance which are borne on inflorescences 20-30cm long. The oblong leaves are between 20 and 40 cm long and 4-6cm wide.
The flowering period of this Thai orchid is December – February.
