The Maejo Sky Lanterns Festival heralds the beginning of Loy Krathong. Between 5 and 10,000 sky lanterns are simultaneously released creating an amazing spectacle. Sky Lanterns or Khom Loy (floating lanterns) are made from paper and originated in China a thousand years ago.
Thai people believe that by releasing the Khom Loy, their bad luck and misfortunes will float away. Maejo is in Chiang Mai, the capital of Northern Thailand and the Maejo Sky Lanterns Festival celebrates the start of the Loy Krathong Festival which is known in the north of Thailand as Yi Peng.
